About us
I’m Keith Sutherland, and I grow and supply UK sourced native trees. From seed to sapling they grow in my nursery in the Carey Valley, a tributary to the Tamar just a few miles downstream. I supply my root trained trees to individuals, businesses and plants people at local farmers markets, horticultural and agricultural gatherings and by post nationwide. I have a passion for all things native and I’m aware of the problems that have arisen from importing plant and animal stock. Tamar Trees promote and support native woodland security which in turn promotes wildlife habitats and supports and benefits our beautiful flora and fauna.
All our trees are grown in sterilised, peat free, locally produced compost, hand sown into conical cells and placed into the nursery to grow. There is so little stress on a cell grown plant during harvesting, transport and replanting that our saplings can be planted almost all year round.
In February 24 we attained certification for the new government Plant Healthy scheme. This recognises that we have high standards of biosecurity across the business and enables us to continue to supply trees and plant passports for grant aided woodland planting.
The Woodland Trust established its own assurance scheme, known as UK & Ireland Sourced and Grown (UKISG) in order to ensure that the trees that the Trust plant and sell are not imported. The country’s increased reliance on imported trees has led to at least 20 serious tree pests and diseases being inadvertently imported into the UK since 1990, resulting in the loss of tens of millions of trees. Tamar Trees attained UKISG status in 2019 and Palnt Healthy in 2023.
Tamar Trees can also help and advise you in the planning of a tree planting project. If you are replanting or creating a traditional regional hedgerow or have a smaller project Tamar Trees can put together a variety of species dependent on your requirements.
